Barracuda Boy and Racehorse Retirement |
|
Horse Race North Dakota and the North Dakota Horse Park are pleased to announce the pending arrival of their new “Equine Ambassador”, the horse Barracuda Boy. Through a partnership with the Adena Springs Farm Retirement Program in Aurora, Ontario, Horse Race North Dakota has acquired graded stakes winning gelding to serve as the Fargo, North Dakota racetrack’s official mascot and public ambassador. By same sire as the filly Eight Belles (Unbridled’s Song) and survivor of a racing injury himself, Barracuda Boy and his story of triumph over injury will become the cornerstone of Horse Race North Dakota’s public education program during the live race meet and throughout the year at area horse shows, horse expos, etc.
General Manager of the North Dakota Horse Park, Heather Benson, stated “We took on this project because we feel that public education on the subject of retired racehorses is integral to the overall health of the sport and the welfare of the horses involved. The negative feedback from the recent Eight Belles tragedy only underscores the importance of public education on the subject live horse racing and Thoroughbred retirement. As such, the North Dakota Horse Park and Horse Race North Dakota is striving to provide an environment where questions can be answered and solutions can be found for our retired horses”.
Barracuda Boy will be stabled in a public access area near the Horse Park’s grandstand during each race day where he will supervised by a public relations specialist who will provide Thoroughbred retirement information as well as answer any questions the general public may pose about retired racehorses and live racing in general. The local English riding club, Alpha Equus, as well as the North Dakota State University Equine Sciences department will also become important partners in the project with Horse Race North Dakota. |
