Ryan Roshau for HRND
Tom Maher Leading Owner The Shamrock Ranch and owner Tom Maher came out on top in the owner’s standings with eight wins on the meet. The Box Elder, South Dakota horseman’s stable is always a formidable band but this year they were particularly impressive in stakes competition.
Maher swept the Min Dak Futurity with Righteous Tessa and finished 1-3-4 in the Red River Derby with No Temper Here, Jets Gol, and Paella Sunday. Maher clinched the owner’s title by virtue of two victories on the Friday, August 29th card. No Temper Here returned to win the 100 yard Real Sprint Stakes and one race later Unsinkable Molly broker her maiden going five furlongs.
Maher edged out Wishek, North Dakota native Curt Rohweder who had seven winners carry his Holstein-patterned silks to the winner’s circle including Aferd’s Code Red in the Dean Kutz. Dave Wisdom and Jerry Gorneau were third with six winners on the meet.

Bob Johnson Leading Trainer Last year Bob Johnson went toe to toe with thoroughbred specialist Dave Bernhardt for the trainers title. This year, the quarter-horse specialist had a few capable thoroughbreds in his barn and that proved to be the difference in the 2008 trainer’s race. Johnson saddled 17 winners on the meet, highlighted by ND Bred QH Derby winner Dripping Diamond and Northern Plains Derby winner TM No Mo Mardi Gras. The Lemmon, South Dakota horseman had many terrific weekends on the meet and made multiple trips to the winner’s circle in four out of the five weekends.
With four winners on the final weekend, Johnson easily out-distanced Vic Hanson, who finished second in the standings with 12 winners. Max Henderson and Dave Bernhardt were third with ten winners respectively. It should be noted that Jim Fleming and Ken Olson each had a terrific closing weekend. Fleming saddled four winners including Dan Diemert winner Skirt Chasin Memory and Olson also had four winners including three consecutive winners on Sunday afternoon.

Jake Olesiak Leading Jockey Ala 2006 and 2007, Jake Olesiak dominated the jockey's colony at the Horse Park. In fact, for the fourth time in as many years, an Olesiak is at the top of the list (Jake’s brother Jordan was the leading rider in 2005).
Olesiak won the race the same way he won many of his starts this season; wire to wire. His biggest surge came over the final two weekends as he piloted 20 winners over the final seven days. All told he had 35 winner’s circle pictures taken. Olesiak rode good stakes winners Givem Hell Harley in the North Dakota Bred Derby and Dr. Cho in the My Fast Horse Stakes.
Soon to be sixty year-old jockey Jim Beeson was second with 20 wins while Zack Bacon, paced by seven winners on the final weekend was third with 18 victories.
