NDSU Equine Sciences
North Dakota State University ("NDSU") envisions the development of a $2-$3 million performance arena on the 14.5 acres set aside on the planned location for the North Dakota Horse Park. These facilities will be associated with a stable unit, plus areas set aside for construction of both and indoor and open-air arena.
The NDSU program presently consists of a major/minor in Equine Studies, which were initiated for the fall semester, 2001. The curricula has the preliminary general education courses, specific college requirements and five courses related to horse production and horsemanship.
The Department is currently headed by Dr. Carolyn (Carrie) Hammer, DVM. Dr. Hammer graduated from Iowa State University with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Animal Physiology. Dr. Hammer's primary responsibilities include overseeing the Equine Studies program and teaching the junior and senior level equine classes.
